It’s official: I. Marlene King is gas-lighting America.
The Pretty Little Liars creator is hardcore playing with our emotions, which is bad news bears seeing as how we’re already emotional about the show ending. (There are only two episodes left. Two.) It all started on Tuesday (June 13), when King tweeted at Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec about collaborating on a new television series.
“Hey @julieplec, I feel like we are always 2 🛳🛳 passing in the night. Wanna grab a ☕️ and talk about making 📺?” King wrote in her tweet, which racked up over 2,000 retweets. See it for yourself below:
Even though Plec didn’t respond to King’s tweet, fans went into a tizzy theorizing about a potential Pretty Little Liars/Vampire Diaries crossover. Exhibit A:
Admittedly, King didn’t confirm anything (or really say much) in her tweet: She just asked Plec if she was interested in working together. But she isn’t an amateur: She knows that even an innocuous tweet like this can disrupt an entire fandom. And it did.
But the gas-lighting continues: In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, King said that a PLL spin-off is totally plausible.
“[A spin-off] is definitely a possibility,” she said, according to Refinery29. “It’s not a for sure thing, but there are ideas swirling around there.”
When ET asked King if she had particular characters in mind for this spin-off, she said, “Yeah, but I’m not going to say just yet who [they] might be.” Again, this isn’t King’s first rodeo: A quote like this is powerful. It gets fans’ hopes up. A million threads will pop up on Reddit this evening probing the PLL army about possible spin-off ideas. She’s toying with us!
Truthfully, we’re here for either of these ideas, but we need to hear something more concrete to get excited. We won’t be fooled by your fake-outs, IMK! Not this time!
